Happy New Year!
As most folks look ahead in the New Year, my interest in Rosario's history tends to make me look back 100 years. This vintage postcard, with it's art nouveau design and celtic theme, would have made Robert Moran happy! Local history is often put into perspective when related to world events. In 1908, the Moran's were over half way through the construction of the Mansion at Rosario while living in the Newhall house on Orcas Island.
Notable regional and world events in 1908:
•Henry Ford introduces Model T.
•William H. Taft elected US President.
•A ball signifying New Year's Day drops in New York City's Times Square for the first time.
•Grand Canyon National Monument is designated.
•Olympic Games held in London, with women competing in the modern games for the first time.
•Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the first Greek-letter organization for black college women is established.
•Robert Baden-Powell begins the Boy Scout movement.
•Start of the first around-the-world car race, from New York to Paris.
•The University of British Columbia was established.
•Mother's Day is observed for the first time.
•Fredrich Cook claimed to have reached North Pole.
•Robert Peary sets sail for the North Pole.
•Western bandits Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid are supposedly killed in Bolivia.
•Child Emperor Pu Yi ascends the Chinese throne at the age of two.
•Henri Matisse opens his own art academy.
Some notable births in 1908 were Rex Harrison, Michael Redgrave, Louis L'Amour, Buddy Ebsen, Bette Davis, Percy Faith, Lionel Hampton, Edward R. Murrow, James Stewart, Ian Fleming, Don Ameche, Milton Berle, and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Happy 2008 from all of us at Rosario Resort & Spa!
